Product Description
Paul Robinson. Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich: Supreme Commander of the Russian Army. Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich Romanov (1856–1929) was appointed to the position of commander in chief of the largest army (6 million) in the world by Nicholas II, his cousin. At 6 ft and 6 in, "Nikolasha" towered over those around him. A complex personality, which Canadian historian Paul Robinson shows in great detail, the Grand Duke mixed a fierce temper in with his aristocratic upbringing. An interesting read, as the only other full-scale biography of Nikolai Nikolaevich, the grandson of Nicholas I, and with the exception of this one, was written by one of his former generals, Yuri Nikiforovich Danilov, in 1930. Nikolai Nikolaevich was one of the earliest critics of the miracle healer Rasputin, which estranged him from this cousin's wife, the Empress Alexandra.
