The Little Humpbacked Horse (Конёк-Горбунок). Also known as The Magic Pony, this piece illustrates a crucial event in the story. The Little Humpbacked Horse is a fairy tale in rhyme by Pyotr Pavlovich Yershov (Пётр Павлович Ершов) (1815-1869). The sculpture, by Galina Dmitrievna Chechulina (1926-), is based on the moment when the peasant's son, Ivanushka (aka The Fool) captures the magnificent flying mare, that has been trampling the night wheat. As a result, the mare promises him a miniature magical horse, which becomes his best friend and faithful defender.
Mstera, late 1990's. Materials used are egg tempera paints, papier-mache, metallic powders and lacquer. Traditional safety pin back. 1½" diameter. Signature of the artist bottom right (A. Nikolaev). 1 only, as shown. Gift boxed. Note: couple of areas on the edge have been touched up with clear lacquer. Photo shows "hot spot", which is not on the piece. Priced accordingly.
