St. Basil's Cathedral (Собор Василия Блаженного). By Yu. Dubovikov, 1991. First plate in the Golden Ring - a series of studies of old Russian churches based on original paintings by master artists from the village of Fedoskino, Russia. No box, no certificate. 1 plate only.
Rising up fancifully, St. Basil's Cathedral (Собор Василия Блаженного) enhances Moscow's Red Square like no other structure in the world. Officially, its full appellation is the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat, or Pokrovsky Cathedral (Собор Покрова Пресвятой Богородицы).
It is a masterpiece of medieval Russian architecture and a gorgeous fantasy of color and design. No two onion domes are alike. The cathedral was built in the 16th century by the command of Ivan the Terrible commemorating the capture of the territories of Kazan and Astrakhan. The architects were Posnik and Barma (who actually may have been one person). There are eight chapels that surround the main, central, chapel that is topped with a tent-type roof. St. Basil's Cathedral is Russia's most famous church and since 1991 has occasionally used for services by the Russian Orthodox Church. It is now a museum.
