Winter Troika (Зимняя тройка). A dynamic troika charges forcefully through a turbulent winter storm. The young couple is oblivious while the driver urges the steeds onward. A troika's system utilizes the center horse holding to a straight line while the two opposite pulling horses generate high speeds. In winter, a troika can go 35-40 mph. Egg tempera, gold, lacquer, papier-mache. Approximately 7" x 3" x 1¼". 1 only.
Yevgeniy Vasilievich Krylov (Евгений Васильевич Крылов) was born in 1929. From 1944-1949 he studied at the Palekh Art School and subsequently was employed in the Palekh art-production workshops. The work is that of a mature artist. The troika is the classic theme of Russian art, including lacquer miniatures. The famous sleigh or carriage that is pulled by three horses is both a symbol of old Russia and a symbol of contemporary Palekh.
