Product Description
Vintage Matka from Poland. This is a larger, and earlier, set of dolls than what we commonly come across. A few decades ago, Polish artisans produced nesting dolls that were exported to the US, as well as elsewhere. This set of six women in descending age is typical in its pastel colors and interesting lathe work. Not many survived in good shape, as they were subject to child's play, and were often beat up with pieces either broken or going missing. First two dolls have the traditional "button" nose. The second to the last has a braid, and the last has a small tuft of hair. Of interest is that the artists painted each bottom of the doll with foot, or shoe, prints, indicating an older doll. Made from heavier wood. "Made in Poland" sticker on the bottom of the first doll. In very good condition, bit of paint loss, but nothing serious. 6½" down to 1¼". 1 only.
