She has a bright decorated dark yellow kerchief knotted at the front. Three flowers are pinned to the kerchief, from which her brown hair emerges. There is a slot for coins, and, in a nod to old-fashioned piggy banks, you have to shake the coins out. This is a quite elaborate and detailed figure. Hand made and painted in Russia. Dimensions are 7½"x5"x3½" and she weighs over 2 pounds. She is brand new but has just a touch of wear due to her travels from Russia to Illinois. 1 only.
Kovrov is a picturesque city of about 170,000 inhabitants and is located on the banks of the Klyazma River in the Vladimir Oblast of western Russia. It is about 150 miles northeast of Moscow and 45 miles south of the city of Ivanovo. Kovrov was founded in 1778 under the reign of Catherine the Great by Prince Vasily Andreyevich Kovrov of Perm. The folk figures and whistles of this town are very playful and are the very definition of whimsical - in short, wonderful exponents of applied Russian folk art from a bygone era.
